The Basics

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that is too damaged, decayed or crowded to keep. Whenever possible, we prefer to save a natural tooth — but when it’s beyond repair or threatens your other teeth, removing it is the healthiest choice. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we handle everything from simple extractions to the most complex surgical removals, all in the comfort of our office and with the full range of anesthesia options to keep you at ease.

Why It’s Done

When is a tooth extraction needed?

There are many reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Your surgeon will always confirm that extraction is the best option before proceeding. Common reasons include:

  • Severe decay or a large infection that can’t be repaired
  • A cracked or broken tooth beyond saving
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • Crowding — making room before orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out on their own

What to Expect

What to expect during your extraction

Most extractions are completed in a single, comfortable office visit, carefully planned around your needs.

  1. Consultation

Your surgeon reviews your health history and imaging to plan the removal and discuss your anesthesia options.

  2. Anesthesia

You’re made comfortable with local anesthesia or sedation before treatment begins.

  3. Removal

The tooth is gently removed. In some cases a graft is placed in the socket right away to preserve the bone.

  4. Recovery

You rest briefly, then head home with clear aftercare instructions for a smooth recovery.

During Your Visit

What an extraction feels like

Before the tooth is removed, your surgeon fully numbs the tooth, jawbone and surrounding gums with a local anesthetic. During the extraction you’ll feel firm pressure — this comes from gently rocking the tooth to widen the socket so it can be lifted out — but not pain, because the anesthetic blocks the nerves that carry pain while leaving those that sense pressure. If you ever feel discomfort during the procedure, just let us know right away and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable.

Some teeth need to be sectioned. This routine step is used when a tooth is firmly anchored in its socket or has a curved root that won’t lift out in one piece — the tooth is simply divided into sections and each is removed individually.

Afterward

Healing and replacing your tooth

After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and is the foundation of healing — so for the first few days you’ll want to avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing, stick to soft foods and keep the area clean. Most patients feel back to normal within a few days.

It’s also worth planning ahead. Unless it was a baby tooth or a wisdom tooth, the empty space will usually need to be filled to protect your bite and bone. Placing a graft at the time of removal with socket preservation keeps the ridge intact, so a dental implant can replace the tooth down the road. Your surgeon will help you choose the right path.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a tooth pulled hurt?

You shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure, thanks to local anesthesia or sedation. Afterward, most patients have only mild soreness for a few days, easily managed with the medication and aftercare instructions we provide.

How long does it take to recover from an extraction?

Most people feel noticeably better within a few days, with the socket healing over a couple of weeks. Following your aftercare instructions — especially protecting the blood clot — helps you heal smoothly and avoid dry socket.

Should I replace an extracted tooth?

Usually, yes — unless it was a baby tooth or wisdom tooth. Leaving a gap can allow neighboring teeth to shift and the jawbone to shrink. A dental implant is often the best long-term replacement, and socket preservation at the time of extraction keeps that option open.

What is a simple versus a surgical extraction?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible above the gum, while a surgical extraction is used for teeth that are broken at the gum line or impacted below it. As surgical specialists, we’re equipped to handle both comfortably.
